2002. Desk-based Assessment.
Assessment of proposed development site.
This site is within the 12th-century planned extension of Newland, and falls within what is believed to be the precinct of the medieval hospital of St John the Baptist (NHER 5487).
See report (S1) for details.
P. Watkins (HES), 23 February 2014. Amended A. Cattermole (King's Lynn UAD), 3 July 2018.

May 2010. Watching Brief.
Twenty piles were sunk under archaeological supervision during development.
The stratigrapy was found to be identical within the soil removed from all twenty piles, consisting of a layer of dark grey waterlogged clay with peaty lenses overlain by a 2-3m deep deposit of mid-brown clay. The lower deposit contained a single sherd of late 17th century slipware and few fragments of twig and peg tile while the upper layer contained a few pieces of 19th and 20th century ceramic building material and plaster.
This site is believed to have been occupied by part of the medieval hospital of St John (NHER 5487), but no evidence for this was recorded. Piles located near Norfolk Street also yielded no evidence of the former causeway upon which Norfolk Street may have been founded, or additional industrial activity as recorded to the north at NHER 31393.
See report (S2) for further details.
An archive associated with this work has been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2011.276).
These finds were previously recorded under NHER 17027.
S. Howard (HES), 25 February 2011. Amended by H. Hamilton (HES), 3 June 2014 and P. Watkins (HES), 10 December 2022.
