Summary

In 1998 a systematic fieldwalking and metal-detecting survey of this area was undertaken by the Cambridge Archaeological Unit. This survey covered a large area including parts of NHER 12780, NHER 11787, NHER 11788 and NHER 13020 (under which its results were previously detailed). Over 800 worked flints were recovered, including many flakes, cores, scrapers, borers and miscellaneous retouched flakes; the majority of which were thought to be of Middle-Late Bronze Age date. A small number of earlier pieces were also recovered including a Mesolithic tranchet axehead, Neolithic polished axehead fragments and discoidal knives. Although pottery sherds and metal objects were also recovered, these were of limited archaeological significance, being exclusively of post-medieval date. The metal objects were predominantly of 19th-century date.

1998. Systematic Fieldwalking and Metal-detecting Survey.
Field survey of South Gorleston Development Area.
This survey covered a large area including parts of NHER 12780, NHER 11787, NHER 11788 and NHER 13020 (under which its results were previously detailed). Unfortunately the report on this work does not contain information on the precise locations of the artefacts recovered.

818 worked flints were recovered including:
1 Mesolithic tranchet axehead.
2 Neolithic polished axehead fragments.
2 ?Late Neolithic discoidal knives.
The remainder of the assemblage comprised 14 core, 620 flakes, 67 retouched flakes, 31 flaked pieces, 11 blades, 2 retouched blades, 6 borers, 10 noted/denticulated flakes, 48 scrapers, 1 knife and 1 ?burin. The bulk of this material was thought to be predominantly Middle-Late Bronze Age in date, with the exception of a small number of blades and scrapers that were potentially associated with earlier activity.

Although pottery sherds and metal objects were also recovered, this material was of limited archaeological significance, being exclusively of post-medieval date. The metal objects were predominantly of 19th-century date. A small amount of slag was also found.
See report (S1) for full details. This survey is also noted in (S2) and (S3).
