Summary

A number of archaeologically significant earthwork features have been identified in the fields surrounding Pearce’s Farmhouse. It is possible that a substantial linear depression and other, apparently associated, linear features close to the farmhouse represent the remains of a medieval moat, albeit one that has been much modified. More ephemeral earthwork features identified in the surrounding fields include the possible remains of a double-ditched causeway and a number of field or enclosure boundaries.

June 2015. Earthwork Survey.
Survey of earthwork features in fields to west, south and east of Pearce’s Farm.
The most substantial feature recorded during this work was the large east-to-west aligned depression immediately to the south of the farm. A number of potentially associated linear features were identified, giving credence to the suggestion that this was a moated site, albeit much modified. The possibility that the large feature was a fish pond was also considered but deemed to be less likely. Other features identified in the immediate vicinity of the farm included a boundary scarp that marks the site of a former cottage. A number of more ephemeral linear earthworks were also identified in the fields surrounding the farm, including a possible double-ditched causeway. The other features probably represent the remains of field and enclosure boundaries.
See report (S2) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 1 November 2016.
