Summary

Excavation of four evaluation trenches in this area in advance of redevelopment recorded several shallow cut features interpreted as the possible remains of post-medieval to modern garden features and a single post-medieval to modern pit. Objects recovered during the work included 16th-20th century pottery, clay pipe stems, brick and tile. Whilst documentary and physical evidence indicate that this site is located within the former precinct of the Augustinian Friary (see NHER 60531 and NHER 10562), no built structures and no finds earlier than the 17th centruy were recovered. No further features or finds predating the 19th-20th century were recorded during subsequent monitoring work.

Map

July 1991. Trial Trenching.
Four evaluation trenches were excavated in advance of construction of a new building.
Five cut features were identified in the two trenches placed in the eastern half of the development area. These consisted of one post-medieval to modern pit and four large and relatively shallow features interpreted as possible remains of a post-medieval to modern formal garden. The two excavated garden features contained six sherds of 16th to 18th century pottery (including glazed red earthenware, tin-glazed earthenware, and Staffordshire slip ware) as well as clay pipe stems, brick, and tile. The fill of the pit contained a small quantity of 16th to 18th century glazed red earthenware as well as modern finds. No features were identified in the west of the site, but 17th to 19th century clay pipe stems and 19th to 20th century pottery and bone were recovered from the topsoil across the investigated area.
Whilst documentary and physical evidence indicate that this site is located within the former precinct of an Augustinian Friary (see NHER 60531 and NHER 10562), no built structures and no finds earlier than the 17th centruy were recovered.
