Summary

Between 2013 and 2014 this site was subject to two phases of archaeological evaluation. An initial geophysical survey identified a number of anomalies in the northern part of the site that may represent archaeological features in the form of pits and ditches. The interpretation of these responses was however tentative and it was noted that their amorphous nature may point to a natural origin. This was confirmed by subsequent trial trenching, which found no evidence for corresponding sub-surface remains. Several undated ditches and gullies were identified elsewhere in the field.

Map

February 2013. Geophysical Survey.
Geophysical survey recorded an area of amorphous positive anomalies and linear anomalies in the north of the surveyed area. These responses indicate the possible presence of pits and ditches, but this interpretation remains uncertain. The anomalies could also be the result of natural phenomena. All other magnetic responses have been interpreted as geological or pedological in origin or caused by modern fences and underground services.
See reports (S1) and (S2) for further details.

August-October 2014. Trial Trenching.
Further evaluation of proposed development area.
The 22 trenches excavated revealed only limited evidence for archaeologically-significant remains. Although the trenches in the northern part of the field were arranged in order to target the previously identified geophysical anomalies, no corresponding sub-surface remains were identified. All of these anomalies must therefore now be regarded as most likely natural in origin. The small number of features identified elsewhere included three ditches and several gullies, none of which produced any dating evidence.
No unstratified finds were recovered.
See report (S3) for further details.
