Summary

A detailed magnetometer survey identified a series of linear responses interpreted as the remains of former ridge and furrow ploughing. This interpretation is supported by observations of extant earthworks across the field. A small cluster of discrete areas of higher magnetic response identified in the north-eastern corner of the surveyed area are also of potential archaeological origin, but this remains uncertain.

Map

February 2013. Geophysical Survey.
A detailed magnetometer survey identified a series of linear responses on a north-south orientation, parallel with the long axis of the field. The surveyors noted that slight earthworks are still visible across the field, and both the earthworks and the anomalies have been interpreted as the result of former ridge and furrow ploughing.
A small cluster of discrete areas of enhanced magnetic response was also identified in the north-eastern corner of the surveyed area. No obvious cause has been identified and therefore they may represent additional archaeological features.
The only other magnetic anomalies identified during the survey consist of linear trends on various alignments caused by modern ploughing and isolated dipolar anomalies created by the presence of modern ferrous material in the topsoil.
See report (S1) for further information.
