NHER 60238 (Find Spot record) - Roman, Late Saxon and medieval finds

July 2013-April 2014. Systematic Fieldwalking and Metal-detecting Survey.
Survey of proposed route of Dudgeon Offshore Windfarm onshore cable (Field 185).
Work in this field and that immediately to the east (Field 186) was halted after a small group of munitions was observed within the survey corridor. This material was likely to relate to the World War Two P51 Mustang crash site at the eastern edge of the field (NHER 57237).

September 2014. UXO Survey.
UXO Survey on proposed route of Dudgeon Offshore Windfarm onshore cable (Fields 185 and 186).
This survey was undertaken in order to identify and remove any ordnance present within the sections of the scheme corridor that pass close to a World War Two P51 Mustang crash site (NHER 57237). Munitions likely to be from this plane had been noted during a preceding archaeological survey (see above).
The survey identified generally low levels of metal artefacts, with two denser clusters identified - one in this field (Field 185) and one in the field to the east (Field 186). The cluster in this field lay close to the recorded position of the crash site and comprised five objects identifiable as being from a P51 Mustang, munitions and 49 unidentifiable metal scraps. An isolated P51 Mustang part was also recovered in the south-east corner of the field. A cluster of eight metal objects was identified in the field to the west, although these were present at a depth of more than 0.5m and so could not be investigated. These lay close to an area of disturbed ground where farm waste is known to have been burnt so it is possibly these objects relate to this activity rather than the Mustang.
