Summary

A small number of objects were recorded during monitoring of groundworks for an extension to No 43 Roman Way. This site is located within the area of the Caister on Sea Late Roman 'Saxon Shore' fort (NHER 8675), but Roman finds were limited to a few sherds of pottery and tile and a copper alloy strap fitting. Other unstratified finds included a Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age scraper, two small sherds of Late Iron Age or Early Roman pottery, a small quantity of post medieval pottery and tile, clay pipe fragments, and a large bovine tooth. It is believed that this area was heavily disturbed by levelling and landscaping for the construction of modern houses.

Monitoring of groundworks associated with construction of extension to No 43 Roman Way
A small quantity of residual finds was recorded during this work. Evidence for Roman activity in the area consists of 12 sherds of pottery (primarily grey ware jars and bowls but also including a reeded rim mortarium and two red ware sherds), a possible copper alloy strap fitting, and three tile fragments. Finds from other periods include a Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age scraper, two small sherds of Late Iron Age or Early Roman pottery, a small quantity of post medieval pottery and tile, clay pipe fragments, and a large bovine tooth.
Stratigraphy observed during this work confirmed that this area remained an arable field until development of Roman Way in the 1960’s, but the ground was heavily disturbed by levelling and landscaping for the modern houses. No archaeologically significant features were recorded.
