Map

October 2013. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
The evaluation revealed a large Roman oven complex, a Roman pit and a post-medieval pit.
Finds from the site included 15 sherds of Roman pottery, three Roman coins and seven post-medieval copper alloy objects. Very few finds were recovered from the immediate vicinity of the oven complex, perhaps suggesting that this was a specialist 'industrial' zone.
See report (S1) for further information.

March 2014. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with construction of accomodation block. The foundations for this building were redesigned in order that the Roman oven complex revealed during the evaluation could be left in situ.
The initial stripping of the site did not penetrate beneath the subsoil. The subsequently excavated footing trenches revealed no archaeologically signficant features or deposits and no finds were recovered.
A pipe trench excavated to the east of the accommodation block also revealed no archaeologically significant remains.
See report (S1) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 11 September 2015.
