Summary

Remains of a post-medieval bridge were observed on either side of a loop of the River Wensum during a visit to monitor re-excavation of this loop and excavation of a new channel. Remains of red brick bridge abutments were observed within an area of rough pasture. Examination of the bricks indicate that the bridge was likely constructed in the mid-19th century, and it has been suggested that it may have been constructed as part of wider changes to Sennowe Hall (NHER 7157) and park (NHER 30487) in the 1850's.

Map

September-October 2011. Watching Brief.
Remains of a post-medieval bridge were observed on either side of a loop of the River Wensum during a visit to monitor re-excavation of this loop and excavation of a new channel. Remains of red brick bridge abutments were observed within an area of rough pasture. The bricks have a small frog, indicating a probable mid-19th century date. It has been suggested that the bridge may have been constructed during changes to Sennowe Hall (NHER 7157) and park (NHER 30487) in the 1850's. A track which led south and west from the bridge was visible as a slightly raised area across the valley.
The re-excavation of the river did not reveal any additional details of the bridge abutments.
