Summary

A trial trench excavated here in 1996 revealed several parallel ditches. Although these features produced only limited dating evidence it is likely that they were post-medieval. Cartographic sources suggest that they may have been associated with 17th century landuse.

Map

March 1996. Trial Trench.
Single trench excavated at site of new reservoir.
Three parallel north-west to south-east aligned ditches identified. The largest ditch produced a post-medieval tile fragments and a ?prehistoric handmade pottery sherd. The two smaller features produced no finds.
Maps of the Intwood Estate show that this area had been an orchard since the early 18th century so it is possible that these ditches related to landuse during the 17th century.
