Full Description
October 2013. Geophysical Survey.
A detailed magnetometer survey was carried out over approximately 3.9 ha of land prior to proposed residential development. This region produced a high degree of background magnetic variation caused by the local geology and modern cultivation of potatoes. However, several linear trend anomalies of possible archaeological origin were identified. Two of these (one running northwest to southeast along the western corner of the site and one running parallel to the modern northern and southern field boundaries) have been interpreted as possible 19th century field boundaries. These boundaries do not appear on Ordnance Survey mapping, but their orientation strongly supports this interpretation. Two other linear anomalies located in the north-eastern portion of the survey area share a different alignment to the modern and former field boundaries and therefore may have earlier origins but this interpretation remains uncertain.
See report (S1) for further information.
See NHER 56657 for details of Roman and post-medieval finds previously found during metal-detecting in this area.
