Summary

Geophysical survey of two small fields in 2013 recorded an area of intense magnetic disturbance in the vicinity of a former quarry pit or pond, indicating the presence of a large quantity of ferrous or ceramic debris within the fill of the feature. A further area of magnetic disturbance to the north-west of the former pit may represent a scatter of ferrous or ceramic debris in the topsoil, but no evidence of this was observed on the field surface during the survey. See NHER 51210 for details of metal-detected finds from this area collected between 2007 and 2010.

Map

April 2013. Geophysical Survey.
A detailed magnetometer survey was carried out over two small fields in advance of proposed development.
An area of intense magnetic disturbance was located in the south-western corner of the western field. This coincides with a small quarry pit or former pond depicted on the First Edition Ordnance Survey Map (S1). The nature of the magnetic responses indicates that the back-fill of this feature contains a large quantity of ferrous or ceramic debris.
A further area of magnetic disturbance to the north-west of the former pit may represent a scatter of ferrous or ceramic debris in the topsoil, but no evidence of this was observed on the field surface during the survey. A small quantity of Roman pottery and medieval and post medieval objects has previously been recovered from this field (see NHER 51210).
No anomalies of possible archaeological origin were detected within the eastern field.
See report (S2) for further information.
H. Hamilton (HES), 15 April 2015.

Also see NHER 60442 for finds recovered from a spoil heap located at [2]. The spoil came from a building site located to the north and south of this point and including this site.
