Summary

Archaeological work at this site between 2013 and 2014 uncovered little evidence for significant past activity. An initial geophysical survey in 2013 had negative results, with no magnetic responses indicative of archaeological remains recorded. Subsequent trial trenching in 2014 did reveal a number of pits and ditches, although these features were mostly either post-medieval or undated. Several pits and a large shaft-like features were regarded as being potentially prehistoric, although finds of this date were limited to a small numer of worked flints.

Map

April 2012. Geophysical Survey.
A detailed magnetometer survey was carried out over a small field and a narrow strip of land in the adjacent field in advance of proposed development.
No magnetic responses indicative of archaeological features were recorded.
All anomalies detected during the survey were attributed to modern activity, including the presence of a bonfire heap and associated burnt soil, interference from adjacent fences and structures, accumulation of debris at the edges of the field, and the presence of scattered ferrous material in the topsoil. One weak anomaly was identified as a geological feature.
See report (S1) for further information.

March 2013. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
The nine trenches excavated revealed little evidence for significant past activity, with the majority of the features uncovered being of likely post-medieval date. Evidence for earlier activity was largely limited to a small assemblage of prehistoric worked flints, including a core of Neolithic date. Most of these flints were though recovered from otherwise undated pits that were regarded as being potentially prehistoric. These included a steep-sided feature that may have been a large post-hole. A deep, steep-sided shaft-like feature was also regarded as being of possible prehistoric date (although its form is similar to that of natural solution features excavated elsewhere).
A trench in the south-east corner of the site revealed numerous pits, several of which contained fragments of post-medieval brick and tile. These were most likely extraction pits, particularly as a sample from one of their fills was found to be largely sterile (producing only a small amount of charcoal). Other features of a similarly recent date included a north-to-south aligned ditch that contained post-medieval pottery sherds, bottle glass and roof tile fragments. Post-medieval tile fragments were also recovered from a pit some distance from the main group and a north-east to south-west aligned ditch that coincided with one of the linear geophysical anomalies.
Undated remains included an adjacent pair of east-to-west aligned ditches, pits and several possible post-holes.
See report (S2) for further details.
An archive associated with this work has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2017.177).
