Summary

A detailed magnetometer survey was carried out over two fields in 2013. Several linear anomalies identified during the survey are likely the remains of former strip field boundaries or more modern field drains. One area of magnetic noise may relate to a watering hole depicted on 19th and early 20th century maps which contains ferrous material within its fill.

Map

January 2013. Geophysical Survey.
A detailed magnetometer survey was carried out over two fields prior to proposed development.
Three north-south and two east-west linear anomalies were detected. The north-south features were located within the eastern half of the site and shared alignment with an existing drain dividing the modern fields whilst the east-west features were located within the western arm of the west field, running parallel to the existing field boundaries. These features likely represent field drains and/or former strip field boundaries.
An area of magnetic noise in the south-east corner of the survey area may relate to a large watering hole depicted on the 1839 Tithe map (S1) and the First Edition Ordnance Survey map (S2). The fill of this feature likely contains ferrous material.
A group of geological features identified as periglacial ice-wedge polygons was recorded towards the centre of the western field. All other magnetic responses are indicative of modern remains such as modern ferrous debris within the topsoil, fences and other structures on the margins of the fields, and debris from a recently demolished building.
See report (S3) for further information.
