Summary

A magnetometer survey carried out at this site in 2013 identified no potentially archaeologically-significant magnetic responses. A subsequent trial trench evaluation undertaken in 2015 did however reveal a number of sub-surface features, including ditches, gullies, possible pits and a post-hole. No dating evidence was recovered, with the absence of artefactual material making it highly unlikely that these remains were associated with domestic activity. Unstratified finds were limited to a single abraded sherd of medieval pottery.

Map

September 2013. Geophysical Survey.
A detailed magnetometer survey was carried out over a single field covering approximately 3.75ha prior to proposed development.
No magnetic responses indicative of archaeological remains were recorded.
All anomalies recorded during the survey have been interpreted as the result of recent phenomena including modern ploughing, the presence of nearby fences and clustering of modern debris around the perimeter of the field, and modern ferrous material within the topsoil. However, the origin of four small dipolar anomalies of moderate strength scattered throughout the field remains indeterminate.
See report (S1) for further information.

June 2015. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
The majority of the 16 trenches excavated revealed sub-surface features, although unfortunately none produced any dating evidence. The potentially archaeologically significant remains included a number of ditches, possible pits and a post-hole. The ditches display a variety of alignments and may therefore have been associated with more than one phase of activity. A number of the pit-like features were fairly irregular suggesting that they may well have been natural features. One of the pits did however produce an assemblage of animal bone, although a sample from its fill produced no plant macrofossils other than a very small amount of charcoal.
Evidence for recent activity on the site included a very large feature in one of the southernmost trenches that contained modern brick rubble. Presumably recent plough scars were also noted in several trenches.
An abraded medieval pottery sherd was the only unstratified find recovered.
See report (S2) for further details.
The associated archive has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2016.259).
