Full Description
May 2014. Geophysical Survey.
A detailed magnetometer survey was carried out over approximately 1.8ha of grassland prior to proposed development.
All magnetic responses were determined to be of modern origin. These included two linear anomalies on the eastern edge of the site interpreted as modern underground services, scattered magnetic debris on the north-western edge categorized as modern, disturbance from nearby fences, and the presence of modern ferrous material in the topsoil.
No magnetic anomalies indicative of archaeological finds or features were recorded. There was also no evidence for the former field boundaries previously recorded as cropmarks (NHER 53302) in this field.
See report (S1) for further information.

May 2015. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
The nine trenches excavated revealed a number of potentially archaeologically significant features, including pits, post-holes, a ditch and a gully. None of these remains produced any dating evidence. The pits were unremarkable with sterile fills and little evidence for their original function.
Two pits were of probable recent date, their fills producing modern ceramic building material.
Although several of the trenches were positioned to investigate the cropmark features previously mapped at this location (NHER 53302) no corresponding sub-surface remains were identified.
This area had recently been cleared of trees and there was evidence for extensive tree root disturbance across the site.
Several fragments of modern ceramic building material were the only unstratified finds recovered during this work.
See report (S2) for further details.
