Summary

A geophysical survey was carried out in this field in 2013. A former pit, hollow, or pond was located in the northeast corner of the site, close to a small existing pond or watering hole. A large ferrous signal in the southeast corner of the survey area also appears to be associated with a former pond. Neither of these features appear on historic mapping and therefore may be quite recent in date.

Map

February 2013. Geophysical Survey.
A detailed magnetometer survey was carried out over an arable field of approximately 2ha prior to proposed residential development.
An amorphous positive anomaly on the north-eastern corner of the site likely represents a soil-filled hollow, large pit, or former pond. A very large ferrous signal in the southeast corner of the field also corresponds to a former pond and suggests that a large amount of ferrous material may have been deposited to fill the feature or that a ferrous object is associated with its construction. There is no evidence of former ponds in this area on historic mapping, including the Enclosure (S1) and First Edition map (S2), or on 1946 (S3) or 1988 (S4) vertical photographs but there is currently a small pond in the northeast corner of the site, near the location of the former ponds. It is most likely that the former ponds are quite recent in date.
All other magnetic responses were determined to be of modern origin, including a short section of dipolar linear anomalies interpreted as a modern pipe or service, magnetic noise around the north-western edge of the site likely created by modern detritus associated with the surrounding buildings, and a similar area in the centre of the site likely caused by a dump of modern material. A small degree of modern ferrous or highly fired material in the topsoil was also identified.
See report (S5) for further information.
