Full Description
October 2002-May 2003. Geophysical Survey.
Geophysical survey work undertaken as part of Environmental Impact Assessment of large proposed mineral extraction area. Initial magnetic susceptibility survey of field, followed by several targeted magnetometry surveys (Areas 2, 4 and 7).
Area 2:
Areas of magnetic debris of possible natural origin.
Positive linear anomalies on north-south and northwest-southeast alignments may be archaeological in origin.
Curving linear at southern edge may be associated with adjacent trackway.
Area 4:
Series of north-south linear anomalies parallel to existing trackways and boundaries and therefore probably agricultural in origin.
Further fragmented north-east aligned linear anomalies are likely to relate to agricultural drainage, although an archaeological origin cannot be ruled out.
Discrete anomalies likely to be mainly caused by ferrous objects, although two discrete features may represent pits.
Area 7:
Low level positive linear anomalies may be archaeological or agricultural in origin. Three short linear anomalies on the same alignment may represent a single north-west-southeast feature.
Discrete anomalies likely to be mainly caused by ferrous objects, although a group of discrete low magnitude positive anomalies in the western part may represent pits.
See report (S1) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in the subsequently produced Impact Assessment (S2).
