Summary

Geophysical surveys conducted in this field in 2003 identified rectilinear anomalies that may represent small enclosures or buildings and a number of other potentially archaeologically significant anomalies. A systematic fieldwalking and metal-detecting survey undertaken around the same time recovered undatable prehistoric, Neolithic, Neolithic/Bronze Age and Bronze Age worked flints; post-medieval pottery sherds and post-medieval/modern and undatable metal objects.

Map

October 2002-May 2003. Geophysical Survey.
Geophysical survey work undertaken as part of Environmental Impact Assessment of large proposed mineral extraction area. Initial magnetic susceptibility survey of field, followed by a targeted magnetometry survey.
Area 10:
Rectilinear enclosures in the south-eastern part of the area surveyed may represent small enclosures or buildings. The negative response may indicate the presence of embanked subsoil.
Two parallel curving anomalies towards the north of the survey area and a broad curvilinear in the south-west corner are also likely to be archaeological in origin.
See report (S1) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in the subsequently produced Impact Assessment (S2).
