Full Description
November 2013. Trial Trenching.
Three trial trenches were excavated in advance of proposed residential development.
The easternmost trench contained a single pit at its southern end containing three fragments of 17th or 18th century red peg tile in its fill, and a second feature identified as a natural tree root hole. The central trench contained a single shallow ditch, oriented northeast to southwest, containing two fragments of 17th or 18th century red peg tile in its fill. Both the pit and the ditch were interpreted at post-medieval features.
The westernmost trench was excavated within the area of a former yard with a hardcore surface. The only feature recorded in this area was a very recent ceramic field drain.
Other finds recovered during this work were limited to unstratified fragments of post-medieval peg tile, red brick, and clay pipe stems recovered from the subsoil. Metal finds were limited to modern iron fragments and nails.
See report (S1) for further information.
