Summary

Banks survive on three sides of a small plantation. They were probably constructed to define the edge of the plantation at the time of planting. The banks on the north and south of the plantation appear to be cut by a quarry pit (NHER 61031), which may mean there was originally a bank on the fourth/eastern side of the plantation, but this was removed when the quarry was excavated.

Map

April 2015. Field visit.
Banks survive on three sides of a small plantation (south, west and north), to the southwest of Thurgarton Old Hall. They were probably constructed to define the edge of the plantation at the time of planting.
The banks are about 3m wide and up to 0.4m tall.
The banks on the north and south of the plantation appear to be cut by a quarry pit (NHER 61031). This may mean there was originally a bank on the fourth/eastern side of the plantation, but that this was removed when the quarry was excavated.
The plantation is shown on (S1) and (S2), suggesting the wood banks were constructed in the early 19th century at the latest.
