Summary

Possible extraction features, of unknown date, were identified as a group of irregular hollows and mounds during a site visit. They are also visible as earthworks on imagery from a lidar survey. They were estimated to cover an area measuring approximately 75m by 40m. The earthworks were presumably associated with gravel and sand extraction.

Map

September 2014. Breaking New Ground field visit. HA 9.
A group of irregular hollows and mounds, covering an area measuring approximately 75m by 40m. Some slopes gentle, others steep. The base varies, with concave, convex and mounded sections. Bracken cover made if difficult to define.
These earthworks were presumably associated with gravel and sand extraction.
D. Robertson (HES), 27 July 2015.

February 2018. 'Brecks from Above' and Breckland National Mapping Programme.
The possible extraction features of unknown date described above are visible as earthworks on imagery from a lidar survey (S1). They have been mapped by extent [1]. The ground surface across much of the surrounding area is also very uneven, perhaps due to natural processes such as scouring by wind and water. Although the earthworks recorded here are more pronounced and more closely spaced than others in the area, it is possible that they are of at least partially natural origin.
S. Tremlett (Norfolk Historic Environment Service), 7 February 2018.
