Summary

An earthwork bank that was probably constructed to define the boundary between Cranwich and Mundford parishes, then later used as the eastern boundary of a plantation in Cranwich Heath. The western boundary of the plantation is formed by another bank (NHER 55980). The earthwork extends southwards to an adjoining east-west earthwork bank which defines the boundary between Cranwich and Weeting.

Map

October 2014. Breaking New Ground field visit. HA 30.
A linear bank, aligned north to south. Up to 10m wide, but disturbed on the east by a ride. Up to 0.7m tall.
It is on the line of a parish and plantation boundary shown on (S1). It was probably constructed to define the boundary between Cranwich and Mundford parishes, then later used as the eastern boundary of a plantation. The western boundary of the plantation is formed by another bank (NHER 55980).

March 2019. Breckland National Mapping Programme.
An earthwork bank, most likely post-medieval in date, is seen on visualised lidar data (S2). The bank is aligned approximately north-south and is cut by modern forestry rides. The bank has been extended from the lidar data further than previously recorded (see above) [1] and is visible on historic maps (S3-S5). The bank most likely relates to the parish boundary between Cranwich and Munford with a section of the bank possibly re used as a plantation bank. The bank is in close proximity to a further boundary bank to the west (NHER 55980)
J.Powell (Norfolk Historic Environment Service), 28 March 2019.

August 2020. Breckland National Mapping Programme.
The bank described above, which is probably a post-medieval (possibly medieval) parish boundary bank and plantation bank, can be traced on the visualised lidar data (S2) as far south as the boundary with Weeting-with-Broomhill parish. Here it turns west, and follows the Cranwich/Weeting parish boundary for a little over 400m, before no longer being visible on the consulted sources. This section was previously recorded as NHER 56070, which has now been revoked. Immediately north of the westward turn, an additional inner bank is visible. The latter is partially depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 6 inch map (S4) as a plantation boundary.
The mapped extent of this record has been extended to include the east-west section previously recorded under NHER 56070 [1].
S. Tremlett (Norfolk Historic Environment Service), 10 August 2020.
