Summary

In 2009 a geophysical survey identified positive linear anomalies that may represent archaeologically significant features. Subsequent trial trenching identified two ditches (possibly separate sections of the same feature), neither of which produced any dating evidence.

2004-2005. Desk-based Assessment.
Archaeological assessment of western route options for Norwich Northern Distributor Road.
See reports (S1) and (S2) for further details.

March-June 2009. Geophysical Survey
Magnetometer survey on proposed line of the Norwich Northern Distributor Road (Site H6). This site was surveyed in order to investigate the nature of previously identified cropmark features (NHER 18907).
Two approximately east-to-west aligned weak linear positive anomalies were identified in this area, along with a number of weaker linear anomalies that were less convincing as archaeologically significant features. None of these anomalies appear to correspond with the cropmark features that have now been mapped at this location.
It was noted that the presence of deep cultivation ridges in the field at the time of the survey will have had a negative impact on the detection of archaeologically significant features.
See report (S3) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 3 August 2015.

February 2010. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed line of Norwich Northern Distributor Route (Site H6). Two trenches excavated in order to test linear anomalies identified during earlier geophysical survey. Two ditches were identified (possibly separate sections of the same feature), neither of which produced any dating evidence. It is possible that these features corresponded with one of the linear cropmark features that have now been identified at this location (NHER 18907).
See report (S4) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S5).
P. Watkins (HES), 30 July 2015.
