Summary

In 1962 various materials deriving from an ancient well below the northwest corner of a stanchion base of Littlewoods Ltd were unearthed by building work. The well was filled in during the 13th century and it contained part of a stone column, glazed and unglazed roof tiles, an unglazed cooking pot and sherds, fragments of a face jug and animal bones. Further rebuilding in 1977 produced sherds of stoneware and Westerwald stoneware. These remains are located within the possible site of Norwich's medieval synagogue (NHER 448), which was demolished in 1286.

July 1962. Casual find. Littlewoods Ltd.
Material was recovered from a spoil heap derived from an ancient well located below the northwest corner of a stanchion base 12 [1].
The well was described by [2] as follows:
Well cut through glacial sand and clay, unlined. Bottom of well on chalk surface. Diameter of well 1.27m (4ft 2in), depth 2.44m (8ft), level of chalk surface 13.11m (43ft) and 3.81cm (1.5in) O.D. 6.64m (21ft 9in) below pavement [3].
Material recovered included a fragment of a stone column, glazed and unglazed roof tiles, unglazed cooking pot and sherds, a base of a large green glazed pot, a fragment of a face jug, and animal bones (NCM 377.962). An over-fired Grimston 'face' (with rim and lip) from this site was included on display in the Norwich Castle Museum keep in 1972.
It has been suggested that the well may have been filled in the 13th century. The well itself is located within the possible location of a medieval synagogue (NHER 448), demolished in 1286.
