Summary

Various phases of archaeological fieldwork at this location have revealed little in the way of significant remains. A geophysical survey on the route of the Norwich Northern Distributor Road (now the Broadland Northway) in 2012/2013 identified a single linear anomaly likely to represent a former field boundary ditch. A geophysical survey of the land to the south in 2022 recorded only fragmentary linear anomalies of uncertain origin, while subsequent trial trenching in this area in 2025 uncovered only two undated ditches. At least two of the ditches probably relate to linear cropmarks thought to potentially represent field boundaries of Iron Age to Roman date (see NHER 52379).

Map

2004-2005. Desk-based Assessment.
Archaeological assessment of western route options for Norwich Northern Distributor Road.
See reports (S1) and (S2) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 4 July 2019.

April 2012-April 2013. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometry survey on proposed line of Norwich Northern Distributor Road (Block 6).
This survey identified a linear anomaly that is likely to represent the line of a former field boundary. It has been suggested that this feature corresponds with a boundary marked on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map, although this would appear to be incorrect. It is however possible that this feature is a continuation of a linear cropmark that has been identified in the field to the north, which is one of several potentially much earlier features present in this area (NHER 52379).
See report (S3) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 4 August 2015. Amended 9 May 2019.

May 2019. Desk-based Assessment.
Assessment of potential archaeological impact of large proposed development.
See report (S4) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 4 April 2026.

April and September 2022. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of part of large proposed development site (Area 1).
This survey of land immediately to the south of the Norwich Northern Distributor Road (now the Broadland Northway) identified little of potential archaeological interest, the only responses of note being several fragmentary linear anomalies regarded as being of undetermined origin.
Broad areas of magnetic disturbance are thought to result from variations in the underlying geological, while scattered discrete dipolar anomalies were probably the caused by ferrous material on or close to the surface – most likely modern debris.
There was no evidence for surviving sub-surface remains associated with several linear cropmarks visible on aerial photographs of this location (all part of a group of potentially Iron Age to Roman probable field boundaries recorded as NHER 52379).
See report (S5) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 4 April 2026.

July-September 2025. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of part of large proposed development site (Trenches 13-26).
The majority of the 14 trenches excavated at this location revealed little in the way of archaeologically-significant remains, with only two undated ditches recorded. These features were encountered in the northernmost trench and both aligned north-north-east to south-south-west. The eastern ditch appears to have coincided with a similarly aligned linear cropmark visible on aerial photographs of this location (one of a number of potentially Iron Age to Roman probable field boundaries recorded as NHER 52379).
No unstratified finds were recovered.
See report (S6) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 4 April 2026.
