Summary

A geophysical survey of this field undertaken in 2012/2013 identified parallel linear anomalies that correspond with cropmark features that have been interpreted as the line of a possible Roman road (NHER 52126). It is possible that these anomalies represent flanking ditches. The other anomalies of note relate to much more recent activity in this field.

April 2012-April 2013. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometry survey on proposed line of Norwich Northern Distributor Road (Block 54).
Two very low magnitude and fragmented parallel north-to-south aligned linear anomalies were identified that appear to correspond with cropmarks though to represent the line of a Roman or later road (NHER 52126). It is possible that these anomalies represent flanking ditches.
An area of magnetic disturbance in the south-west corner of the field surrounds the site of a post-medieval building known as Lone Barn. It is possible that this disturbance is a result of material spread when this structure was demolished.
A possible extraction pit was also identified in the centre of the field.
Although a range of other anomalies were identified these are not thought to be of archaeological significance, being most likely of agricultural or geological origin. There was no trace of the east-to-west aligned cropmark mapped in the northernmost part of the field.
See report (S4) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 5 August 2015.
