Almshouses built around 1902.
These houses were built by the recently amalgamated St Swithin's charity and replaced demolished almshouses that had previously stood near St Swithin's Church (NHER 576). These earlier almshouses dated back to the late 16th century, having been built by the charity founded by the Norwich mayor Augustine Steward in his will of 1570.
Although almshouses are not an unual building type the Plough Yard examples are notable for being deck-access domestic flats - which is normally regarded as a feature of 1950s and later high-rise blocks.
