Summary

In 1993 a watching brief at 29 Colegate recorded a substantial medieval flint and mortar wall. This was probably part of the precinct wall of the first Dominican Friary, although it is possible that it was the west wall of the lost pre-Friary church of St John the Baptist (NHER 564). Finds recovered included two fragments from a medieval limestone coffin lid.

Map

Pre November 1993. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of structural repairs at 29 Colegate.
Underpinning of the west gable wall revealed a substantial north-south aligned flint and mortar wall that survived to a high of approximately 1.6m. This medieval wall was probably part of the precinct wall of the first Dominican Friary, although it is possible that it was the west wall of the lost pre-Friary church of St John the Baptist (NHER 564).
Three fragments of medieval dressed limestone were recovered during these excavations, two of which formed part of a 12th- or 13th-century coffin lid. The third piece was a spandrel from an arch of probable 15th century date.
See brief note (S1) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S2) (listed under NHER 26284). See also report on coffin lid (S3).
The limestone spandrel is now held by the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2008.502) [1] but the present location of the coffin fragments is unknown.
The mapped location of this record reflects the true location of the monitored groundworks, the recorded grid reference being somewhat inaccurate (TG 2306 0904).
