Summary

A systematic fieldwalking survey of this field undertaken in 2011 recovered a large assemblage of Neolithic to Early Bronze Age worked flints including scrapers, blades, flakes, and a core. This concentration of material extended into the area to the south-east (NHER 58837). Other finds recovered included Late Prehistoric, Roman, medieval and post-medieval pottery sherds; medieval to post-medieval ceramic brick and tile fragments and post-medieval clay tobacco pipe fragments. Much of this material was likely deposited as a result of night soiling, with the unusually high proportion of 17th- to early 19th-century high-status wares within the post-medieval assemblage suggesting at least some was coming from Norwich or possibly a nearby inn. Subsequent metal-detecting between 2015 and 2020 recovered medieval/post-medieval pot sherds; Roman, medieval and post-medieval coins; medieval and post-medieval jettons; post-medieval tokens and a range of other, Roman and Late Saxon to post-medieval metal objects. These metal finds include a Roman copper alloy stud; a Roman to post-medieval copper alloy unidentified object; Late Saxon to post-medieval lead spindle whorls; medieval and post-medieval dress accessories (including a medieval silver brooch); a medieval key and lead pot mend; medieval/post-medieval copper alloy vessel fragments, copper alloy rings, a copper alloy vessel suspension mount, copper alloy sieve fragment and lead weights and post-medieval crotal bells, furniture escutcheon plates, a coin weight, harness mount, book clasp, spur fragment, casket hinge plate, furniture fitting, furniture mount, copper alloy seal matrix, lead palm-guard thimble, lead powder charge cap and lead cloth seal.

March-April 2011. Fieldwalking. Field 2.
A wide range of finds dating from the Neolithic to the post medieval period were recovered during a systematic field survey which included eight fields on the northern and eastern edge of Hethersett.
Flint finds from this field consisted of one core, 252 flakes, 12 blades, and one scraper. This assemblage has been broadly dated to the Neolithic or Early Bronze Age and represents a concentration of flint finds which was seen to extend into the northern and western edges of Field 3 (NHER 58837) located to the south-east. Two sherds of handmade pottery (possibly Middle to Late Iron Age) indicate settlement in this area during the Late Prehistoric period.
Roman finds were limited to three sherds of 2nd to 3rd century pottery.
A small quantity of medieval pottery, primarily medieval sandy ware, was identified as well as a moderate quantity of post-medieval pottery. The post-medieval assemblage contained an unusually high proportion of 17th to early 19th century high-status wares that could indicate night-soiling from Norwich or possibly from a nearby inn. This was observed across all of the surveyed fields. Additional evidence of activity during this period included a scatter of 17th to 19th century clay pipe fragments and ceramic building material including a small quantity of medieval to post medieval roof tile and brick and late 17th to early 18th century pantile.
Metal-detecting yielded a small quantity of objects in the majority of the studied fields. These have not been reported in detail, but generally consisted of typical post medieval to modern night soiling and agricultural debris.
