Summary

In 1990 human remains were disturbed during the excavation of a trench in this patch of waste ground. These bones appeared to represent the lower half of a single individual suggesting a burial had been disturbed. This site lies close to the location of the lost medieval church of St Olaves (NHER 452) so this discovery may well be evidence that the associated graveyard extended into this area.

Map

22 December 1990. Casual Observation.
Found during excavation of trench in waste ground off St Crispin's Road:
Human remains - apparently the lower portion ("pelvis to feet") of a single individual.
Information from police report and accompanying sketch map [1]. See also photographs (S1).
The trench had been infilled by the time the police attended, although the bones themselves had been retained.

The car park for the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses was present by this date so we can be reasonably certain that the "waste ground" noted is the area immediately to the south of Malzy Court. The walls and buildings visible in the photographs would appear to confirm this. It should be noted that this site lies close to the postulated position of St Olave's Church (NHER 452) so these bones may well be an indication that its graveyard extended into this area.
P. Watkins (HES), 7 September 2016.
