Map

Early 2000s. Fieldwalking.
This area was subject to fieldwalking by [1] on at least one occasion. It is not clear exactly what was recovered but sketch maps produced by the finder [2] indicate that that several distinct concentrations of material were identified, including several potentially prehistoric burnt flint scatters (Contexts 1-4). A scatter of possible Iron Age pottery (Context 5) and two scatters of what the finder identified as Saxon pottery (Contexts 6 and 7) were also identified.

This site is the likely source of a number of objects that were recovered by [1] at Little Ellingham during 2004. It is possible that the scatter at Context 5 is the 'Iron Age site' listed in the finder's notes, which is recorded as having produced 16 sherds of Iron Age pottery. The surrounding scatter (Context 6) may well be the 'Saxon/Norman site' which is listed as having produced the following finds:
3 Neolithic/Bronze Age worked flints.
1 Roman brooch fragment.
181 Saxon/Norman pottery sherds.
1 undated quern fragment and 3 slag fragments.

This site is also the probable source of three metal objects that were recovered at Little Ellingham by [1] around the same time. These are listed in the finder's notes as:
1 Saxon belt fitting.
1 medieval coin.
1 undated pot mend.

All objects identified by finder, see various maps and notes in file.
