Summary

A geophysical survey of this site in 2014 had largely negative results, with only a single discrete anomaly identified as potentially archaeologically significant. Although subsequent trial trenching in 2014 and 2025 did reveal a number of pits and ditches, most produced little or no dating evidence. The one notable exception was a pit containing a moderate amount of Early Iron Age pottery and a ceramic spindle whorl. Single sherds of less diagnostic Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age pottery were also recovered from another pit and a linear feature. The undated remains included a curvilinear feature that potentially represented part of a small penannular ring-ditch, although this was quite irregular.

Map

April 2014. Geophysical Survey.
Geophysical survey of part of large proposed development area (Field 2).
Only a single discrete anomaly was identified as potentially archaeologically significant.
Various other, weaker discrete anomalies are thought to probably represent naturally silted hollows or variations in topsoil depth.
Several parallel linear anomalies are likely to relate to current or recent cultivation.
An area of magnetic disturbance at the western edge of the field probably represents modern debris of some kind.
Information from report uploaded to OASIS. HER copy awaited.

November 2014. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site (Trenches 5-8).
The four trenches excavated at this location revealed a number of pits and several ditches and gullies.
None of the various discrete features excavated produced any clear dating evidence and all were fairly unremarkable. One exception was a sub-circular pit that produced a reasonably large sherd of Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age pottery and was therefore potentially prehistoric. A sample taken from the fill of this feature produced a plant macrofossil assemblage composed almost entirely of charcoal and another remains associated with the combustion of organic material. The other pits were mostly shallow and produced no evidence for their original function. One pit was however potentially the corner of a much larger sub-rectangular feature.
The various linear features produced no dating evidence.
See report (S1) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 17 October 2016. Amended 8 June 2021.

January 2025. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of part of large proposed development site (Trenches 10-15)
Six additional trenches excavated around the margins of this site revealed a number of it pits and ditches, although these were again mostly undated. One notable exception was a pit containing 59 Early Iron Age pottery sherds and a ceramic spindle whorl. A single sherd of Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age pottery was also recovered from a linear feature that appeared to be cut by this pit. A small number of blade-like flint flakes of probable Early Neolithic were also recovered, although these were all residual within the Early Iron Age pit.
The more notable of the undated features included a small curvilinear feature that potentially represent a penannular ring-ditch, although it appears to have been quite irregular. A sample taken from the fill of one of the undated pits produced little of note.
The majority of the undated possible pits recorded appear to have been fairly unremarkable and it is noted that a number may have actually been natural in origin.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
An archive associated with this work has been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2022.189).
