Summary

Between 2010 and 2015 several phases of archaeological work were undertaken in this field, which has been identified as the possible site of a post-medieval gibbet (NHER 15218). A geophysical survey identified a linear anomaly that corresponds with a former post-medieval field boundary and several other anomalies of possible archaeological significance. A subsequent evaluation revealed little in the way of archaeologically significant evidence and certainly nothing that could be associated with the possible gibbet site. An initial metal-detecting survey failed to identify any notable finds concentations, with only modern and undatable material recovered. Subsequent trial trenching revealed only a single feature – a ditch that had probably been associated with a 19th-century field boundary.

Map

August 2010. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of proposed development site.
This survey revealed a potential former field boundary and other magnetic anomalies of possible archaeological significance.
Details awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 18 October 2016.

January 2015. Systematic Metal-detecting Survey and Trial Trenching.
Two stage evaluation of proposed development site.
An initial metal-detecting survey sought to identify any finds concentrations within the topsoil and subsoil deposits. This work revealed no significant evidence with only modern debris (including more than 120 cans) and nondescript metal fragments recovered. It was noted that concentrations of modern finds often corresponded with magnetic anomalies identified during the earlier geophysical survey.

The second phase of evaluation saw the excavation of 11 trial trenches. This work revealed two ditch segments, the position and alignment of which suggests they were probably part of the same feature. Although no convincing dating evidence was recovered, this feature corresponds with a field boundary shown on the 1st Edition O.S map. This boundary is not shown on an enclosure map of 1810 suggesting it was a 19th-century feature.
A deep sequence of deposits revealed in one of the trenches was probably material filling a natural hollow.
Although a range of geophysical anomalies were investigated none were found to be associated with archaeologically significant sub-surface remains.
A single fragment of potentially post-medieval ceramic building material found in one of the excavated ditch segments was the only find recovered during this phase of work.
See report (S1) for further details.
The archive associated with this work has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2017.289).
P. Watkins (HES), 6 September 2016. Amended 19 May 2019.
