Summary

A single trial trench excavated at this site in 2012 revealed a number of features of probable post-medieval or modern date. These remains included a ditch, a gully, a pit and a number of post-holes. The post-holes and several of the other features lay in a line suggesting they were probably associated with some form of boundary.

Map

October 2012. Trial Trench.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
The single trench excavated exposed a number of features including a shallow ditch, a gully, a pit and a number of post-holes. The majority of the post-holes lay in a line suggesting they may have formed a fence line. The pit and the gully also lay on this line suggesting that they were probably associated with the same boundary. The ditch was almost certainly a post-medieval feature as it appears to correspond with a plot boundary marked on the 1st Edition O.S map (and many subsequent maps). The other features produced only limited dating evidence, although the material recovered was almost exclusively post-medieval. These finds included pottery sherds, ceramic building material, clay tobacco pipe and bottle glass. Given that the site appears to have been gardens since at least the late 19th century it is entirely possible that these finds were residual within what were actually much more recent features.
Unstratified finds from the site included a post-medieval copper alloy button.
