Summary

A single trench excavated in the north-east corner of this field in 2010-2011 revealed nothing of interest. A more extensive trial trench evaluation undertaken in 2012 revealed a range of archaeologically significant features including ditches, gullies and possible pits. The majority of these feature were undated, the one exception being a post-medieval ditch or gully. A small number of unstratified prehistoric finds were also recovered including potentially Mesolithic/Early Neolithic worked flints and a several Late Prehistoric pottery sherds.

Map

October 2010-April 2011. Trial Trenching.
Excavation of trench at proposed site for directional drilling pit on route of Earlham Grid to Norwich Main Underground Diversion cable (Trench 8).
This trench at the north-eastern end of the site revealed no archaeologically-significant features or deposits.
No finds were recovered.
No subsoil deposit was present.
See report (S1) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 20 March 2021.

March-September 2012. Watching Brief.
Examination of easement stripped during installation of underground electricity cable along eastern edge of field (Area 1).
No archaeologically-significant features were observed.
It should though be noted that conditions were far from ideal. Along most of the cable route the easement was not stripped under archaeological supervision and at this site the cable itself had also been installed prior to the commencement of the watching brief.
A single unstratified sherd of post-medieval was recovered in this field.
See report (S2) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 7 August 2021.

October-November 2012. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site adjacent to Norwich Research Park.
This work revealed a number of archaeologically significant features including ditches, gullies, possible pits, a post-hole and several natural features. Unfortunately little in the way of dating evidence was recovered. The one exception was a small ditch or gully that produced a small assemblage of post-medieval material. It should be noted that the various linear features display a variety of alignments suggesting that they were probably associated with more than one phase of activity. The discrete feature were also fairly unremarkable
A small assemblage of worked flints was recovered during this work, although most are not closely datable and no diagnostic tools are present. A small number of pieces are however probably the result of earlier prehistoric activity. These include a potentially Mesolithic blade core and at least one blade of Mesolithic or Early Neolithic date. A single sherd of possible Iron Age pottery and a small number of undiagnostic prehistoric sherds were also recovered.
None of the trenches coincided with the cropmark features previously identified in this field (NHER 54426).
See report (S3) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S4).
The associated archive has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2016.177).
