Summary

A trial trench evaluation at this site in 2014 revealed three undated ditches, a potentially modern ditch and a number of modern pits. It is possible that at least two of the undated ditches were broadly contemporary with the extensive Roman remains that have now been identified immediately to the north-west of this site (NHER 3364).

Map

August-October 2014. Trial Trenching.
Partial evaluation of proposed development area.
The six trenches excavated at this site revealed four ditches and a number of pits. A north-to-south aligned ditch is recorded as having produced modern ceramic building material, although this may well have been intrusive as there is no evidence for a field boundary at this location during the 20th century. The other three ditches produced no dating evidence. Two were aligned north-west to south-east, which matches the alignment of the Roman enclosures that have been identified nearby (NHER 3364 and NHER 28000). Clusters of pits were revealed in two trenches, although in both cases the finds recovered suggested that these features were all likely to be modern.
No unstratified finds were recovered during this work.
