Summary

In around 2000 a number of metal objects were found in the garden of this property. These finds included an Early Saxon mount; a Middle Saxon strap end; an unusual Middle/Late Saxon copper alloy miniature prayer book, and an unidentified medieval object.

Found at bottom of garden by owner of property:
1 Early Saxon bird mount.
1 Middle Saxon strap end.
1 Middle/Late Saxon copper alloy miniature prayer book with engraved inscription (PAX TIBI MARCE, EVA[NGALISTE MEUS]).
1 medieval unidentified copper alloy object.
1 ?modern ?stair rod.
Identified from photograph by B. Ayers (NLA), see correspondence (S1) and copy of photograph in file [1]. The inscribed object was initially identified as a Roman blessing but was re-identified as a probable 9th-century miniature prayer book in 2009 - see unpublised document (S2), which includes information supplied by B. Salway and M. Hassall (UCL). A similar object found at Bentley in Hampshire is recorded in the PAS database (object ID HAMP527).
