Summary

The soilmarks of angular and linear marks of uncertain origin and significance were visible on aerial photographs. The light-coloured soilmarks could relate to surface indications of chalk banks and boundaries, potentially suggesting settlement remains at this location. See NHER 37419 for nearby Roman settlement evidence suggested by surface assemblage. However there was an apparent change in the appearance of the marks between February and March 1946, which potentially indicated that the marks were of agricultural origin or largely related to activity in the field during 1946. It is possible that they relate to underlying 'patterned ground' caused by natural chalk ridges formed by past periglacial conditions.

Yet it must be noted that some of the marks are also visible in 1947 (S3).
