Summary

An area of possible earthworks of uncertain date and archaeological significance may be visible on aerial photographs and the 0.5m resolution Lidar data. Within the northeastern part of the site is an area of possible ridges, running across one another – potentially similar to cross-ploughing – which are faintly visible on the 0.5m resolution Lidar data. These may relate to temporary episodes of cultivation of this area in the post-medieval period. Although they may relate to either historic or relatively recent activity possibly associated with the planation regime.

Map

February 2017. 'Brecks from Above' and Breckland National Mapping Programme.
An area of possible earthworks of uncertain date and archaeological significance may be visible on aerial photographs (S1-S4) and the 0.5m resolution Lidar data (S5).
None of these features were mapped due to some uncertainty over their origin. The area is covered with tracks and evidence of activity in the 1940s and 50s (S1-S4 suggesting that many of the features relate to relatively recent activity – although it is possible that this is obscuring earlier earthworks. No clear trace of these features surviving as earthworks could be detected on the lidar data (S5).
However within the northeastern part of the site is an area of possible ridges, running across one another – potentially similar to cross-ploughing – which are faintly visible on the 0.5m resolution Lidar data (S5).
