Full Description
April 1978. Field Observation.
Visit by E. Rose (NAU) to site of now demolished building known as Drayton Lodge (not to be confused with the ruins recorded as NHER 7854). There are still a few outbuildings here called 'Lodge Farm' and a garage. They could well be of 17th-century date.
P. Watkins (HES), 25 October 2017.
1980s. Building Survey.
Two ?barns at right-angles to each other.
The north-to-south building is 18th century, originally timber-framed, five bays with large central door to west. Wall posts survive on east wall and in part of west wall. Arch-braces evidenced by mortices now replaced by knees. The walls bricked up with possibly original brick between studs on south gable wall. Queen-strutted, collared, principal rafter roof with staggered butt purlins. Oral evidence suggests a date of 1724.
The east-to-west building is whitewashed brick, the nature of which suggests a possible date of c. 1700-1720 (Flemish bond with vitrified headers). West gable corbelled above brick kneelers and tumbled above. Roof as in other range but without queen struts to principals. Original use unclear as not convincingly a barn.
See short report (S1) for further details.
