1970s or 1980s. Building Survey.
Examined as part of Norwich Survey.
Two-storey block, jettied over street with large flint rubble end gables. First floor with quadrant moulded ceiling timbers and end stops. Original back walled trapped within later extension, expanding a one-room deep block into a two-room deep plan. Roof appears to belong to later extension. Block appears to be 16th century, enlarged and reroofed in the early 17th century. The dormers appear to be original. In the modern cellars are the remains of two moulded brick arches with a pointed profile, one on the west wall with blocking indicating a pointed barrel vault beneath Maddermarket and the second in the rear wall of a Victorian extension of the Shrub House on St Andrew's Street (NHER 62409).
See record forms (S2) for further details and copy of photograph of street elevation.
P. Watkins (HES), 16 November 2017.
This building is amongst those mentioned in thesis (S3), which considers the 13th- to 17th-century buildings of Norwich. It is described as a two-storey building with timber-framed first floor and a flint rubble, full-height rear wall. It is dated to the 16th century and the extension that created a two-room deep plan to the early 17th century.
P. Watkins (HES), 16 November 2017.
Pre 1993. Stray Find.
Given as "19-23 St John Maddermarket". Nos 17-19 are NHER 683 and Nos 21-23 are NHER 62409. It seems probable that NHER 62409 is meant.
Brought to Norwich Castle Museum for identification in 1993 and never collected by source [1]:
Late 16th- or 17th-century window frame found plastered over.
Clothing and shoes of 19th-century date were also found in a wall behind a chimney.
See copy of identification by D. Jones (NCM) in file.
This seems a late date for a ritual deposit of clothing.
E. Rose (NLA), 22 December 1999.
Window frame found prior to or during 1993 is 600mm high and over 900mm wide (end missing). Two lights remain of hollow moulded window with glazing rebates and diamond glazing bars of wood. Upright at end somewhat crudely fitted to sill and lintel as if window assembled from stock portions. Date is indeed at end of 16th century. In very poor condition.
Seen by E. Rose (NLA) 28 January 2000. See photographs (S4).
