Summary

In 2017 trial trenching at this site identified a number of ditches, several of which appear to correspond with previously identified cropmark features (NHER 9396). Unfortunately no dating evidence was recovered from the excavated ditches and as a result the cropmark field system remains undated.

Map

March 2017. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development area.
Four trenches were excavated, revealing a number of north-to-south and east-to-west linear features. It is reasonably likely that a number of these features correspond with two perpendicular linear cropmarks that form part an undated field system mapped in the vicinity of the Thickthorn roundabout (NHER 9396). The excavated features were shallow and produced no dating evidence, the sterile nature of their fills suggesting that they most likely some distance from any contemporary settlement focus. It is noted that these ditches do not appear to correspond with the late post-medieval field system that can be seen on 19th-century maps of the area.
No unstratified finds were recovered.
See report (S1) for further details.
