Summary

A programme of archaeological work undertaken at this site between 2016 and 2017 revealed little evidence for activity prior to the post-medieval period. An initial geophysical survey identified few potentially archaeologically significant anomalies and subsequent trial trenching revealed only a small number of dispersed linear and discrete features. Although virtually no dating evidence was recovered it is clear from cartographic sources that most, if not all, of the linear features were associated with former field boundaries of post-medieval and modern date.

February 2017. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development area.
This work revealed a dispersed scatter of archaeological features, comprising ditches, gullies and a small number of possible pits and post-holes. Dating evidence was virtually absent, with finds limited to two prehistoric flint flakes and two fragments of unidentifiable metalwork. It does however appear that most, if not all of the excavated linear features are of relatively recent date. A number of the ditches appear to correspond with former field boundaries marked on 19th-century maps and several others clearly mark the line of a later boundary visible on 20th-century Ordnance Survey maps. The remaining linear features remain undated, although their alignments suggest there are associated with fairly recent subdivisions of the field. The majority of the excavated discrete features lay in close proximity to the post-medieval and modern boundaries suggesting that most were probably the remains of associated fencing.
See report (S1) for further details.
