Map

August 2017. Excavation.
Excavation of new house footprint.
The ground level was reduced by approximately 0.5m, revealing only post-medieval and later deposits. Hand augering suggested undisturbed natural deposits lay at a depth of approximately 1m below the modern ground surface. Demolition rubble of an uncertain date was encountered at a similar depth in the northern part of the site.
The redevelopment of this site also saw the demolition of a garage that incorporated the remains of a pair of 19th-century cottages (part of the south-western wall of which was retained to form a new boundary wall). The cottages had relatively shallow footings, being constructed on an area of clay make-up and levelling material. A cache of beer and wine bottles dating to around 1900 was found within the repaired wall fabric of the south-west corner of the cottage.
The majority of the finds recovered during this work were of post-medieval date, the only exceptions being two adraded sherds of medieval recovered from a subsoil deposit. The post-medieval objects included pottery sherds, roof tiles, clay tobacco pipe stems, a horse-harness buckle, a coin and a button.
