Summary

A watching brief maintained during the excavation of a new dyke in 2012 revealed a linear peat deposit at this location. This may have been a surviving baulk of peat between two areas of former peat extraction.

Location

Map sheet TG30SE
Civil Parish LANGLEY WITH HARDLEY, SOUTH NORFOLK, NORFOLK

Map

April-July 2012. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of new dyke excavated as part of the Broadland Flood Alleviation Project (Compartment 20).
No archaeologically features were identified, the only potentially significant observation being a notable change in the natural deposits at this location. A linear area of pear was observed that was perpendicular to Hardley Dyke and unusual in that its upper horizon was convex within the surrounding silty clay. It is possible that this was a surviving baulk of peat between two areas of peat extraction.
The 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map shows a field boundary in this approximate location, but this is probably coincidental.
See report (S1) for for further details.
