Summary

Trial trenching at this site in 2017 revealed a number of dispersed ditches and pits. Due to a lack of finds the majority of these features remain undated. The only exceptions were three intercutting ditches that can be seen to correspond with a known post-medieval field boundary. Whilst some of the other features may have been related to one or more earlier phases of activity, their sterile fills suggest that they were most likely some distance from any contemporary settlement focus.

Map

January 2017. Trial Trenching,
Evaluation of proposed development site.
The six trenches revealed a number of sub-surface features including nine ditches and six pits. Unfortunately none of these features produced any dating evidence. A group of three intercutting ditches exposed in the southern part of the site can however be identified as post-medieval as they correspond with a field boundary depicted on 19th-century maps. The other ditches are impossible to date at present, although it can be noted that their alignments are broadly similar to those of the late post-medieval field boundaries.
A pair of circular features in one of the trenches were interpreted as possibly post pits as was another similar-sized feature in another trench. The other discrete features were unremarkable pits of uncertain function.
No finds were recovered during this work.
See report (S1) for further details. The archive associated with this work is to be donated to Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2017.367).
