Full Description
June-October 2016. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with residential development.
Ground reduction and the excavation of footing trenches within 24 plots revealed little of great archaeological significant. Although structural remains were encountered at a number of locations these were of relatively recent date, relating to buildings that occupied the site during the 19th century. One of these buildings was the Norwich Arms public house, which was the likely source of a number of 19th-century ceramic beer jars found during the work. The other remains relate to a number of terraced houses that previously fronted onto this section of Sprowston. The only other feature of note was an pit that contained a single fragment of highly vitrified fuel ash slag of probable post-medieval or modern date.
Other unstratified finds of note included a small assemblage of Late Prehistoric worked flints.
See report (S1) for further details. The archive from this project will be donated to Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM:2016.391).
