Summary

A geophysical survey of this field undertaken in 2016 identified no archaeologically signficant anomalies. Trenching trenching in 2017 did however record several ditches and a pits, although unfortunately none of these features produced any dating evidence. A subsequent watching brief during the excavation of several engineering trial pits recorded no archaeologically significant features or deposits.

Map

September 2016. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of possible development area.
This survey identified no potentially archaeologically significant anomalies.
See report (S1) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 9 February 2018.

January 2017. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site of proposed new road and associated infrastructure (Trenches 1 and 2).
One of the two trenches excavated in this field revealed a pit and four ditches, none of which produced any dating evidence. Three of the ditches had similar north-west to south-east alignments and may have represented the reinstatement of the same boundary. The forth ditch was aligned east-to-west. The pit was circular, with a concave profile and a single charcoal-flecked fill. All five features were fairly shallow, suggesting a significant degree of plough truncation.
No unstratified finds were recovered.
See report (S2) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 9 February 2018.

January 2017. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of excavation of engineering trial pits in proposed development area (Trial Pits 7, 9-10 and 12-13).
No archaeologically significant features or deposits observed.
See report (S2) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 9 February 2018.

An archive presumed to comprise material from both phases of work in 2017 has been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2019.244).
P. Watkins (HES), 9 December 2022.
